appearance. The old Gora Bazar still retains its old world
charm.
In
1821, a contingent of 14,000 British & Indian army persons
along with Camel corps, Cavalry & Artillery moved in from
Secundarabad under the command of a Brigadier General. They
camped on the southern bank of the Kanhan & the Cantonment
began to take shape.
In
1823,the Bhosales gifted to the British three nearby
village's, Yerkheda, Desada and Wagholl, as well as some land
along the Kanhan river. Very soon Kamptee developed into a
full fledged cantonment where many famous British and Indian
regiments have been stationed from time to time.
The
Brigade of The Guards Regimental Center, Military Hospital,
The Army Postal Service Training Center, NCC OTS, and
Institute Of Indian Military Law as well as other troops are
garrisoned here.
Geographical
Position : 21.10'N 79'E. It is 16.093 kms from Nagpur on the
main Mumbai-Kolkata railway. Distances to Mumbai & Kolkata
are 853,34 & 1113.478 kms respectively. The
highest point in Kamptee is 302.581 meters above MSL.
The Kamptee Cantonment board
is an autonomous body functioning under the overall control of
the Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India, Supervision and
Control over the working of the Cantonment Board is exercised
by the Principal Director, Defence Estates, SC, Pune and by
the Central Government through the Director General, Defence
Estates, New Delhi / Ministry of Defence at the Apex level.
